How I stopped working for money and started building assets
July 10, 2026 · 6 min read
For almost ten years I had the feeling of running very fast without getting anywhere. I worked long days, closed deals, put out fires every single day, and still, when the end of the month came, it felt like I was starting from zero again. It was not a problem of effort. It was a problem of design.
The trap of trading hours for money
If your income depends on you being present, physically or mentally, every single day, you do not have a business: you have a job you built for yourself. I lived there for a long time. My business grew, but I could not let go of a single thread without something falling apart. That is the first blind spot I see in almost every entrepreneur I know: we confuse billing more with being free.
Money does not change your life if your mindset does not change first.
I heard that line and repeated it for years before I actually understood it. I understood it the day I stopped asking myself how much I can bill this month and started asking what am I building that keeps generating value when I am not there.
What an asset really is
An asset, the way I understand it, is anything that works for you even when you are not working: a system someone else can run, a relationship of trust that generates referrals without you asking for them, a documented process that does not depend on your memory, a product or piece of content that keeps serving people long after you created it. None of that showed up in my life by accident. I had to build it on purpose, with the same discipline I used to put out fires.
The first change I had to make was not with money, it was in my head. I had to accept that being busy is not the same as building, and that the fear of letting go of control was mine, not the business's. Once I understood that, delegating, writing systems down, and investing in what lasts stopped scaring me. I simply started doing it.
If you are today where I was, buried in work but not moving forward, I invite you to ask yourself one question this week: of everything you did today, what part of it will still be working for you tomorrow? If the answer is little or nothing, that is your starting point.
